If you reject: No cookies are placed, but Google's behavioral modeling provides ~85% accurate aggregated insights about traffic trends.

5.5. How We Handle Cookie Rejection

The Problem (Old Way - Without Consent Mode V2)

Before: If you rejected analytics cookies:

  • We couldn't place ANY cookies
  • We couldn't see ANY of your behavior
  • We lost 25-35% of traffic data
  • Our reports became inaccurate

The Solution (New Way - With Consent Mode V2)

Now: If you reject analytics cookies:

  • ✓ NO cookies placed on your device
  • ✓ NO personal data stored or shared
  • ✓ BUT we still get ~85% accurate traffic insights
  • ✓ Using Google's behavioral modeling AI

Here's How It Works

When you ACCEPT analytics cookies:

You visit our site → Cookie placed on device →
Your data tracked in detail → Your journey recorded →
We see: pages, time, behavior, conversions

When you REJECT analytics cookies:

You visit our site → No cookie placed (respects your choice) →
Anonymous signal sent to Google →
Google compares to similar users who accepted →
Google's AI estimates your likely behavior →
We see: traffic trends, approximate conversions, general patterns

Why This Is GDPR Compliant

  1. No cookies without consent
    • Your choice is respected
    • No tracking files on your device
    • Completely optional
  2. No personal data stored
    • Behavioral modeling doesn't create a profile of "you"
    • No user ID created if you reject
    • All data is aggregated
  3. You have full control
    • You can change your mind anytime
    • You can request data deletion
    • You can see how we're tracking you
  4. Transparent about methods
    • You're reading about it right now
    • We explain behavioral modeling
    • You understand what we're doing

6. Google Consent Mode V2 Deep Dive

What Is Google Consent Mode V2?

Google Consent Mode V2 is a technology framework that allows websites to:

  1. Respect your cookie choices - No cookies if you say no
  2. Continue providing insights - Through behavioral modeling
  3. Stay compliant with laws - GDPR, CCPA, DMA, etc.
  4. Build better analytics - AI learns from willing participants

The Four Consent Parameters

When you interact with our cookie banner, we're actually updating these parameters:

ParameterWhat It ControlsIf You AcceptIf You Reject
analytics_storageGoogle Analytics cookies✓ Cookies stored✗ No cookies, but pings sent
ad_storageGoogle Ads cookies✓ Cookies stored✗ No cookies, limited ads
ad_user_dataYour data for ads✓ Used for ads✗ Data not used
ad_personalizationPersonalized ads shown✓ Personalized ads✗ Generic ads shown

Behavioral Modeling Explained

When you reject tracking cookies, Google uses "Behavioral Modeling" — here's what that means:

The Process:

  1. You visit our site and reject tracking cookies
  2. Your page view/action is recorded as an anonymous ping
  3. No cookies, no user ID, no personal data stored
  4. Google's machine learning system compares this ping to users who DID accept
  5. Google finds "similar users" - people with similar:
    • Device type
    • Location (country/general region)
    • Time of visit
    • Initial page viewed
    • Browsing behavior (estimated)
  6. Google estimates: "Based on similar users, this visitor probably has X% chance of converting"
  7. We get the estimate instead of exact data

Real Example:

You (rejected): Visit product page
Without consent, we don't know if you buy

Similar User #1 (accepted): Visited product page → Bought ($50)
Similar User #2 (accepted): Visited product page → Bought ($75)
Similar User #3 (accepted): Visited product page → Bought ($60)

Google estimates: User who rejected probably has ~70% conversion rate
Our report counts you as: "0.7 conversions" (estimated)

Accuracy: ~85-90% for aggregated reporting

Privacy Guarantee With Behavioral Modeling

Even though Google estimates your behavior:

  • ❌ NO profile of "you" is created
  • ❌ NO personal identifier is stored
  • ❌ NO historical data about you is kept
  • ❌ You cannot be identified by this data

✓ You appear as aggregated trends only
✓ The estimates are temporary (not stored long-term)
✓ You're still completely anonymous

7. If You Reject Cookies, Here's What Happens

CategoryIf You AcceptIf You RejectWe Still Know
Your individual visits✓ Yes, detailed✗ No, just counts✓ Total visitors
Your journey✓ All pages✗ Not tracked✓ Popular pages
Your conversions✓ Exact conversion✗ Not recorded✓ Estimated conversion rate
Your return visits✓ Knows you're back✗ Can't identify you✓ Return visitor percentage
Your interests✓ Builds audience✗ Not tracked✓ General content preferences
Your location✓ City level✗ Country level only✓ Country traffic
Your device✓ Device ID tracked✗ Device type only✓ Desktop vs Mobile
Your ads✓ Personalized✗ Generic ads✓ General ad effectiveness

10. Technical Details (For Curious Users)

The "Ping" Explained

When you reject cookies but we still see data, here's the technical side:

What is a "ping"?

A ping = Single anonymous event signal
Contains:
- "User viewed homepage"
- Device type: Mobile
- Browser: Chrome
- Country: India
- NOT stored in cookies
- NOT linked to your identity
- No personal data included

Example ping sequence:

You visit site → Ping sent: "homepage_view, mobile, India"
You click product → Ping sent: "product_click, mobile, India"
You leave site → Ping sent: "session_end, 2min30sec, mobile"

Google sees: "4 pings from India on mobile, looks like engaged user"
Estimates: "70% conversion probability for similar users"
We see: "+0.7 conversions" in reports

Your data: Completely anonymous, deleted after 30 days
Our insight: General trend data, stays for analysis

Consent Mode V2 Parameters (Technical)

For developers: Consent Mode V2 uses 4 parameters we set:

gtag('consent', 'update', {
  'analytics_storage': 'granted' | 'denied',
  'ad_storage': 'granted' | 'denied',
  'ad_user_data': 'granted' | 'denied', // NEW in V2
  'ad_personalization': 'granted' | 'denied' // NEW in V2
});

Each parameter is independent:

  • You can accept analytics but reject ads
  • You can accept ads but reject personalization
  • You have granular control

11. FAQs About Consent Mode V2

Q: Doesn't this mean you're still tracking me secretly?

A: No. It's the opposite:

  • We respect your cookie choice (no cookies)
  • We don't identify you (no personal data)
  • We estimate aggregate trends only
  • You're MORE private, not less

Q: Can you de-anonymize the behavioral modeling data?

A: No, and here's why:

  • No user ID is created or stored
  • No long-term profile is maintained
  • Data is aggregated with thousands of others
  • Technical impossibility to identify individuals

Q: Is 85% accuracy enough?

A: Yes. For our purposes:

  • Traffic trends: 95% accurate
  • Content popularity: 90% accurate
  • Conversion estimates: 85% accurate
  • More than enough for business decisions

Q: What about users with VPNs or privacy mode?

A: Same treatment as cookie rejection:

  • Behavioral modeling applies
  • Pings are sent (anonymous)
  • Aggregated data collected
  • Never personally identified

Q: If I change my consent, does old data stay?

A: It depends:

  • Old tracking data: Deleted per GDPR/CCPA
  • Behavioral modeling (pings): Aggregated, not personally stored
  • Analytics reports: Keep historical trends but no personal info

Q: How long is behavioral modeling data kept?

A: Google keeps:

  • Individual pings: 30 days
  • Aggregated trends: 26 months
  • Your personal data: None (not collected)

Q: Can advertisers still target me?

A: Only if you accept ad_storage:

  • If you reject: You see generic ads only
  • No demographic targeting
  • No behavioral targeting
  • No remarketing

Q: Is this compliant with GDPR/CCPA/DMA?

A: Yes, verified by:

  • Google's legal team
  • Privacy regulators in EU, US, UK
  • Used by 80%+ of websites (industry standard)
  • Explicitly designed for GDPR/CCPA compliance

Q: How do I verify you're not cheating?

A: Several ways:

  1. Browser tools: Firefox, Chrome have consent indicators
  2. Browser extensions: Privacy extensions show what's tracking
  3. Request your data: Ask us what data we have - should be none if you rejected
